There were several more matches for the WTA at the Family Cup Circle as 13th seeded Nadia Petrova defeated 8th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets, 4th seeded Vera Zvonareva dropped the first set, but won the next two to oust Stefanie Voegele, the 17th seeded Marina Erakovic was crushed by 5th seeded Serena Williams in straights, while her sister Venus Williams had little trouble with Anastasia Rodionova and won in straight sets, 6th seeded Sabine Lisicki knocked off Yaroslava Shevedova in straights, 3rd seeded Marion Bartoli was UPSET by 14th seeded Polona Hercog in three sets and Aleksandra Wozniak couldn’t handle 9th seeded Lucie Safarova and lost in three sets.

The Masters at Augusta National with a purse of $8 million kicked off yesterday as Tiger Woods got off to a solid start but finished the last two holes with bogeys to finish the first round even par tied for 29th as Lee Westwood came out swinging to secure the lead on the leaderboard with a score of 5 under par as Louis Oosthuizen and Peter Hanson finished the opening 4 under par tied for second.
In sporting news, UCONN has lost its final appeal to obtain a waiver for its men’s basketball program due to several years of below standard Academic Progress Rate scores.  The decision will likely keep the program out of next year’s postseason tournament.
