Indy 500, NASCAR, NL-MLB, PGA, Boxing & UFC Results: 5/28, Vol. 151, 2nd Edition

The milk was pouring on Sunday on the bricks at the Indy 500 as it was a day of remembrance of two time former Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon who passed on October 16 of last year at the 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championship at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  But as far the checkered flag is concerned, Dario Franchitti stamped his name as he became a the latest three time winner of the Indianapolis 500, while Scott Dixon finished 2nd and Tony Kanaan finished 3rd.

NASCAR was burning up the track under the lights at the Coca-Cola 600 in North Carolina as Kasey Khane held off Denny Hamlin and won his 3rd Coca-Cola 600 and 1st win with Hendricks Motor Sports, while Kyle Busch finished 3rd, Greg Biffle 4th and Brad Keselowski round out the top five but in the Nationwide Series at the 2012 History 300 at Charlotte it was Brad Keselowski leading 67 laps to win his 2nd Nationwide victory of the year as he used a fake pitt stop to help him secure the win as Denny Hamlin came in 2nd and Kyle Busch finished 3rd.

The National League had eight games on tap in Major League Baseball as the Colorado Rockies was defeated by the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 as Troy Tulowitzki belted a homerun, the New York Mets SHUT OUT the San Diego Padres 2-0 as R. A. Dickey struck out 10, the San Francisco Giants eked out a one run win over the Miami Marlins 3-2 with a homer from Melky Cabrera, the Chicago Cubs were manhandled by the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-4 with 3 homers from 3 Pirates, while the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals blasted the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 as Roy Halladay left after 2 innings with shoulder soreness, the Houston Astros were crushed by the LA Dodgers 5-1 with Jerry Hairston, Jr.’s 5 hits, the Arizona Diamondbacks got by the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 as Aaron Hill contributed 3 hits and the Washington Nationals crushed  the Atlanta Braves 7-2 as Gio Gonzalez won his 7th game with 10 strikeouts.

The golf clubs were swinging on the PGA Tour at the BMW PGA Championship and Rory McIlroy failed to make the cut and Luke Donald winning by 4 strokes with a 15 under par, Donald overtakes the world’s #1 ranking again and Paul Lawrie and Justin Rose finished tied for 2nd and Peter Lawrie finished 4th.  And at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth, TX with a purse of $6.4 million and Zach Johnson took home the top prize money with a 15 under par, while Jason Dufner finished 2nd, Tommy Gainey 3rd and Jim Furyk finished 4th.

Across the pond in England, Carl Froch of Nottingham battled unbeaten Romanian-born Canadian Lucian Bute for the IBF Super-Middleweight title and it was Froch getting the KNOCK-OUT in the 5th round with a right hand rocker to the claim the title.

And at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, two time heavyweight champion Frank Mir battled current title holder Junior dos Santos in UFC 146 and dos Santos didn’t waste any time and came out with a vengeance with a flurry of left/right combo’s that had Mir stunned and dos Santos finished him off in the 2nd round Mir could not withstand the continued flurry and dos Santos earned the TKO to keep his title around his waist.
