The National League had a couple few day games in Major League Baseball as the Arizona Diamondbacks outlasted the Colorado Rockies 9-7 with Justin Upton’s homerun in the 9th inning, the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals was defeated by the San Francisco Giants 7-5, the Cincinnati Reds were befuddled by the New York Mets 9-4 as R. A. Dickey struck out 8 batters, the Pittsburgh Pirates knocked off the Washington Nationals 5-3 with 2 homeruns from Andrew McCutchen, the Miami Marlins were SHUT OUT and literally spanked by the Atlanta Braves 7-0 as Brandon Beachy threw a 5 hit shut-out to notch his 5th win, while the Philadelphia Phillies eked out a one run win against the Chicago Cubs 8-7 Carlos Ruiz bringing 3 RBI’s, the Milwaukee Brewers were SHUT OUT and blasted by the Houston Astros 4-0 with a homerun from Jed Lowrie and the LA Dodgers annihilated the San Diego Padres 8-4.

In sporting news, Jonathan Vilma of the New Orleans Saints, who has been suspended for the 2012-13 season, has sued Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL for defamation, claiming the commissioner made false statements that tarnished his reputation and stifled his ability to earn a living playing football.  Vilma’s attorney, Peter Ginsberg, who filed the suit in U. S. District Court in New Orleans, stated “by suing Commissioner Goodell in court, Jonathan opted to use a fair playing field where he has procedural rights and protections to remedy the harm Commissioner Goodell has done to him.”

A day after a report from the examiner.com allegedly claimed boxing champion Manny Pacquiao quoted a Bible verse from Leviticus calling for the death of a man who lies with a man; Pacquiao went on his boxing defense to clarify his comments.  Pacquiao, who opposes President Barack Obama’s support for gay marriage says he loves and supports gays and lesbians, even though he does not approve of gay marriage.

For your NFL Quick Hits, LeSean McCoy and the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a five-year contract extension that runs through 2017 and the deal is worth $45 million, including $20,765,000 guaranteed, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker told the Boston Herald that he did not accept the one-year, $9.5 million deal because he was optimistic a long-term deal was imminent, but stated that negotiations have "gotten worse”, New York City police have decided not to bring charges against Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall for an altercation outside a nightclub in March, according to Marshall's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain has been sentenced to 180 days in jail for assault and other charges stemming from a fight in his hometown when he allegedly threatened to kill a man and fired a gun next to his head and was also fined $2,000, New York Jets nose tackle Kenrick Ellis, facing a felony charge for malicious wounding, reached a plea agreement Thursday in Hampton (VA) Circuit Court, according to sources and agreed to a misdemeanor assault and battery during a pre-trial hearing, the New York Jets and first-round pick Quinton Coples agreed to terms Thursday on a four-year contract, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed placekicker Connor Barth to a four-year, $13.2 million contract and finally, New York Giants Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor has put his Super Bowl XXV ring up for auction and as of late Thursday night, Taylor's ring received 20 bids, with the highest bid at $89,568…talk about bling, bling.
