In sporting news, the NCAA is laying down the law with tougher sanctions as they demand that everyone play by the same rule book.  The board of directors wants coaches to be held more accountable for rule breaking offenses and to help with that, they passed a package of sweeping changes that will accomplish just that.  They also passed longer postseason bans and fines that could reach in the millions of dollars for rogue programs.  Justice will be quicker as well, with 24 versus 10 infractions committee voting members which will allow as many as ten meetings to occur annually versus the traditional five.

Hardy and center fielder Adam Jones were each awarded the honor by baseball's managers and coaches, the Detroit Tigers announced manager Jim Leyland would return in 2013 with a one-year contract extension, the Chicago White Sox have agreed to a two-year, $29 million extension with Jake Peavy and if he reaches innings pitched thresholds over the course of the 2013 and 2014 seasons, he can elect to extend the contract to include the 2015 season at a salary of $15 million, the New York Mets have exercised third baseman David Wright's $16 million contract option, the Atlanta Braves have exercised options on catcher Brian McCann, right-hander Tim Hudson and left-hander Paul Maholm, Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero had surgery on his elbow and is expected to need six weeks to recover, the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a three-year, $22.5 million contract extension with closer Brandon League on Tuesday, Oakland Athletics pitchers Dallas Braden and Joey Devine have cleared outright waivers and chosen to become free agents rather than accept assignments to Triple-A Sacramento, and finally, the Texas Rangers declined to pick up club options for right-handed pitchers Scott Feldmanand Yoshinori Tateyama for the 2013 season.
