Texas Southern athletic department slapped with five years probation |
In sporting news, the
2010 SWAC Conference title that was won by Texas Southern’s football team will
be a distant memory as the NCAA has slapped the university’s athletic
department with five years’ probation.
The NCAA concluded that TSU’s culture of rule breaking, which spans over
a period of two decades, included improper recruiting tactics, academic
impropriety and financial aid and eligibility violations that involved 129
student-athletes in 13 sports. In the
NCAA’s 34 page report, it cited TSU with not having institutional control and
the sanctions levied by the NCAA, including some self-imposed by TSU, consist
of postseason bans for football through 2014 and men's basketball through
2012-13, football scheduling and scholarship restrictions and an order vacating
won-loss records and championships from 2006 through 2010 in all sports and
through 2011 in women's soccer and football.
