For your Quick News & Notes, the NCAA has fired Abigail Grantstein, the lead investigator in the eligibility probe of UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad as the move comes a month after a woman told the Los Angeles Times she heard Grantstein's boyfriend loudly discussing the case on an airplane, the NCAA will suspend Texas guard Myck Kabongo for the remainder of the season due to an investigation whether he retained an agent, if he told the truth about whether he paid for a workout in May and if Texas was aware of his intentions to go to Cleveland for a May workout after his freshman season, a three-month investigation into academic fraud at the University of North Carolina revealed that not only student-athletes, but students at large were given added academic benefits within the school's African and Afro-American Studies department and those benefits included unauthorized grade changes, forged faculty signatures on grade rolls and limited or no class time, LSU punter Brad Wing has been suspended for the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Clemson for violating team rules, Utah State promoted offensive coordinator Matt Wells to head coach Thursday, replacing Wisconsin-bound Gary Anderson.

The NHL announced the cancellation of more games on Thursday, this time through January 14, as time is running out to salvage a season, recovering right-hander Mike Pelfrey and the Minnesota Twins finalized a $4 million, one-year contract on Thursday, filling another hole in a thin rotation, the Baltimore Orioles have signed outfielder Adam Greenberg, who gained national attention in 2005 when he was hit in the head during his first major league at-bat, to a minor league contract, former All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco on Thursday signed a one-year contract with the Miami Marlins worth $2.75 million and Polanco can earn an additional $125,000 if he appears in 100 games, and another $125,000 if he appears in 120 games, free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski has agreed to terms with the Texas Rangers on a one-year deal, pending a physical, the Chicago Cubs and pitcher Edwin Jackson agreed to terms on a four-year, $52 million deal, and finally, Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees, called Donna Soto, the mother of Victoria Soto, a young teacher killed while protecting her first-grade students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in last week's Newtown tragedy, as Vikki was a huge Yankees fan…..may God rest her soul and all others who lost their lives in peace.
