The National Hockey League only had two games on the ice last night as the Montreal Canadiens skated past the Tampa Bay Lighting 5-2 and the Detroit Red Wings needed a shootout to notch the win over the St. Louis Blues 3-2.
The Family Circle Cup is underway in Charleston, SC in the WTA with the third thru fifth matches featuring Stafenie Voegele defeating Lucia Hradecka in straight sets, 12th ranked Yanina Wickmayer getting past Yaroslava Shevedova in straight sets, 6th ranked Sabine Lisicki needed three sets to get past Andrea Hlavackova and Venus Williams was back in action in dominating fashion as she blasted 7th ranked Jelena Jankovic.

In sporting news, the National Football League released its pre-season schedule on Wednesday as all twelve playoff teams from last season will appear on national television this preseason.  Here are the pre-season games that will appear on Monday Night Football, as the San Diego Chargers will host the Green Bay Packers on August 9, the Dallas Cowboys will play at Oakland Raiders on August 13, while the Philadelphia Eagles will travel to Foxborough to face off against the New England Patriots on August 20 and the Tennessee Titans will host the Arizona Cardinals on August 23, which is a Thursday night game.

The National Basketball Association had a plethora of games on the hard court last night as the first nationally televised featured a potential sneak peak for the NBA Finals as the Miami Heat got past the Oklahoma City Thunder 98-93 with the help of LeBron James untraditional double-double as he netted 34 points and passed out 10 assists, the defending champion Dallas Mavericks knocked off the Memphis Grizzlies 95-85 with Dirk Nowitzki’s 23 points, the Utah Jazz lost a close one to the Phoenix Suns 107-105 with Michael Redd’s 19 points, the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 107-98 with 30 points from Monta Ellis, the Golden State Warriors sneaked by the Minnesota Timberwolves 97-94 with a game high of 31 points from David Lee, the New Orleans Hornets eked out a two point win over of the Denver Nuggets 94-92 with a double-double from Chris Kaman, while the second nationally televised game featured a Hollywood re-production of the Battle of LA as the LA Lakers took back the city against the Lob City Clippers in the rubber game 113-108 as Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum combined for 67 points, the Boston Celtics lost a heartbreak by one measly point against the San Antonio Spurs 87-86 as Tim Duncan only had 10 points, but hauled in 16 rebounds, the Atlanta Hawks manhandled the lowly Charlotte Bobcats 120-93 with 24 points from Josh Smith, the Indiana Pacers had no problems with the Washington Wizards with a score of 109-96 as Danny Granger poured in 20 points, the Toronto Raptors demolished the Philadelphia 76er’s 99-78 with 24 points from Andre Bargnani and the Portland Trailblazers outmuscled the New Jersey Nets 101-88 as LaMarcus Aldridge scored 24 points.
The first official game of the 2012 Major League Baseball season in a soft opening day, featured the new look, new named and new stadium of the Miami Marlins hosting the defending world champions St. Louis Cardinals, but it was the Cardinals knocking off the Marlins 4-1.

In sporting news, 100 points scored in a basketball game and counting!  No, not team points, but by one player.  If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard about this accomplishment, its perhaps because it happened in the Lebanese league game.  Mohammad El Akkari of Moutahed of Tripoli, surpassed the century marked and scored a total of 113 points against Bejjeh as records show that this was the first 100-point performance in an official game in any league of the FIBA Asia National Federations. El Akkari only scored one point from free throws and was 40 of 69 from the field with 32 of 59 three’s made and before the game, El Akkari only averaged 7.6 points in 23 games.
