San Antonio Spurs sweep
the Utah Jazz
Win or go home!  That’s theme in the National Basketball Association during the playoffs as there were two games last night on the hard court and the Utah Jazz are going home as they were swept by the San Antonio Spurs 87-81 as Manu Ginobili lead the Spurs with 17 points and the Spurs now kick up their heels and await the winner between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Lob City Clippers, and speaking of those two aforementioned teams, the Clippers managed to outlast the Grizzlies in overtime 101-97 with 30 points from Blake Griffin and 27 points from Chris Paul and the Clippers take commanding 3-1 series lead.

The puck was flying all over the iceeeee last night as the National Hockey League had two games skating in the playoffs as the New York Rangers got past the Washington Capitals 3-2 in overtime to take 3-2 series lead as Brad Richards helped the cause with a goal and the Phoenix Coyotes eked out a one goal win over the Nashville Predators 2-1 as the Coyotes win the series to advance to the Western Conference Finals as Derek Morris scored a goal.

The American League had six games on the diamond yesterday in Major League Baseball as the Cleveland Indians got past the Chicago White Sox 8-6 as Travis Hafner launched a homerun and Phil Humbler, who just weeks ago threw a perfect game, now is not so perfect and couldn’t get out of the 3rd inning, the Texas Rangers literally spanked the Baltimore Orioles 14-3 with homeruns from Michael Young, Josh Hamilton and Brandon Snyder, the Boston Red Sox outmuscled the Kansas City Royals with 2 homeruns from Will Middlebrooks, while the LA Angels crushed the Minnesota Twins 8-3 as Jered Weaver earned his 5th win of the season and the Detroit Tigers lost against the Seattle Mariners 3-2.

In sporting news, all four players suspended in the New Orleans Bounty Scandal, Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove all appealed their suspensions on Monday.  In addition, the player’s union filed a grievance that basically is challenging NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s authority to punish the players since the acts occurred before the current collective bargaining agreement was signed and that a CBA arbitrator should be the person to punish and not the commissioner.  In an interesting twist to this situation, Hargrove, who is now with the Green Bay Packers, provided a sworn statement that he was told by ex-defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and current Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt to basically lie that the bounty program did not exist and to pretty much play dumb.

For your quick news and notes for the upcoming Summer Olympics, the United States lost to Slovakia 4-2 Monday for its first loss at hockey's world championships after opening with two victories, Olympic organizers said Monday they were looking into a tabloid's report claiming that a worker had been able to sneak a fake bomb, a plastic container with batteries, a phone and modeling clay, into Olympic Park, Brianne Theisen set the Pac-12 record in the heptathlon with 6,353 points on Sunday and it surpassed the Olympic "A" qualifying standard of 6,150 points, track and field athletes and officials who take part in illegal betting at the Olympics and other events will face bans of two to four years, the IAAF said and finally, Usain Bolt won the 100 meters in 9.82 seconds in the Jamaica International Invitational on Saturday night, a month before the sprinting powerhouse's Olympic trials.

In sporting news, a day after Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels intentionally hit rookie Washington Nationals Bryce Harper in the small of his back and stated “I was trying to hit him…..I'm not going to deny it. I'm not trying to injure the guy. They're probably not going to like me for it, but I'm not going to say I wasn't trying to do it. I think they understood the message, and they threw it right back. That's the way, and I respect it”.  Well, for his actions and perhaps his words, Hamels was suspended for 5 games by the Major League Baseball and he was also fined.
