New Orleans Hornets
wins 2012 Draft Lottery
The second game in the Eastern Conference Finals in the National Basketball Association tipped off last night as the Miami Heat were looking to go up 2 games to zero against the Boston Celtics, but the Heat found themselves down by 15 points in the 2nd quarter, but came storming back and needed overtime to outlast the Celtics 115-111 despite Rajon Rondo becoming the first player in NBA history to score 44 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds,  but LeBron James’ 34 points and 10 boards helped the Heat go up 2 games to none in the series.

It’s here, it’s here, it’s finally here as the Stanley Cup Finals skated with the puck last night and the LA Kings battled the New Jersey Devils and the Devils put up a fiery fight but needed overtime to try to game one in the Finals, but it was the Kings eking out a one goal win 2-1 to win the opening series.

The WNBA had two games on the hard court last night as the defending champion Minnesota Lynx got past the Washington Mystics as Lindsay Whalen had put back her own miss with 1 second left to win the game 79-77 and the Chicago Sky clobbered the San Antonio Silver Stars 77-63 as Sylvia Fowles poured in 23 points.

The bats were swinging yesterday in the American League with a couple few day games in Major League Baseballa as the Kansas City Royals knocked off the Cleveland Indians 6-3 , the Oakland A’s were SHUT OUT by the Minnesota Twins 4-0 with 9 strikeouts by Francisco Liriano, the Chicago White Sox won by a run 4-3 over the Tampa Bay Rays as Nate Jones got the win in relief, the Baltimore Orioles were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 as all four runs came from 4 solo homeruns, while the Detroit Tigers were edged out by the Boston Red Sox 6-4 with the help of David Ortiz’s 12th homer, the New York Yankees edged out the LA Angels 6-5 as Curtis Granderson launched his 16th homer of the season and the Seattle Mariners literally spanked and manhandled the Texas Rangers 21-8 as Justin Smoak homered twice…man, that’s a football score!

For your London Summer Olympic News, with 58 days to go before the start of the London Games, the Olympic torch has travelled through Much Wenlock, a small town in central England credited as the birthplace of the Olympics in 1850, the president of the Syrian Olympic Committee says nine athletes from the war-torn country have qualified for the London Olympics and will compete "despite all pressures, media war and threats to ban them”, the International Volleyball Federation has dismissed claims of Japanese match-fixing at a London Olympics qualification tournament in Tokyo as they found no evidence after investigating whether the Japanese women's team deliberately lost against Serbia and finally, almost two years after Alberto Contador was stripped of the title for failing a doping test, Andy Schleck has his yellow jersey for winning the 2010 Tour de France.  Now that’s truly a better late than never……huh!

For your NBA Quick Dribbles, the New Orleans Hornets, recently sold by the NBA to New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, won the NBA's draft lottery Wednesday and the # 1 pick overall, which they almost certainly will use to pick Kentucky star Anthony Davis, Rod Higgins said owner Michael Jordan of the Charlotte Bobcats, informed Patrick Ewing that the team plans to hire someone other than him to replace Paul Silas, the NBA's Basketball without Borders camps will go to Tokyo and Moscow for the first time and South Africa also will host a camp for the 10th time.

The National League had it going on yesterday in Major League Baseball as the San Diego Padres lost 8-6 to the Chicago Cubs as Darwin Barney launched a walk-off homerun, the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates were embroiled in a pitcher’s duel but A. Burnett got the last laugh as the Pirates defeat the Reds 2-1, the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals were pasted by the Atlanta Braves 10 runs over the Cardinals 7 runs as Brian McCann & Freddie Freeman each belted a homerun, the Philadelphia Phillies also put up 10 runs to the New York Mets 6 runs with a the 8th homer of the season from Carlos Ruiz, while the Washington Nationals were defeated by the Miami Marlins 5-3 as Giancarlo Stanton went yard, the Houston Astros were literally spanked by the Colorado Rockies 13-5 as Carlos Gonzalez launched not one, not two, but thrrrrrreeee homeruns, the Milwaukee Brewers got the best of the LA Dodgers 6-3 and the Arizona Diamondback knocked off the San Francisco Giants 4-1.

In sporting news, South Carolina Gamecocks head ball coach Steve Spurrier still believes that college football players should receive some sort of stipend. Spurrier, who brought up the notion a year ago at the annual SEC spring meetings, pitched the topic once again. Spurrier would like to provide football players and other revenue producing sports such as men’s basketball, a stipend of $3,500 - $4,000 per year to and stated “we're trying to get extra money for living expense, academic expense, game-related expense to our players because of the tremendous amount of money, billions they're bringing in and we as coaches believe they're entitled to a little more than room, books, board and tuition.”

For your NFL Quick Hits,  Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones reiterated that he has no intention to trade disgruntled cornerback Mike Jenkins, adding that no draft pick could change his mind, arbitrator Steven A. Burbank of the University of Pennsylvania, has met with the NFL and the players' union in a dispute over commissioner Roger Goodell's authority to punish players in the New Orleans Saints bounties scandal and the player’s union also asked that Burbank, not Goodell, hear appeals by the four players that are suspended, New England Patriots draft pick Alfonzo Dennard has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a police officer outside a bar in Lincoln, where he played cornerback for Nebraska, ESPN analyst Kordell Stewart, who hasn’t played in years as a quarterback and other positions in the NFL, has finally filed his retirement papers and will retire as a Pittsburgh Steeler and finally, the Minnesota Vikings announced Wednesday that 24 year old cornerback Asher Allen has retired from football only after his third year in the NFL and coach Leslie Frazier didn't get into specifics of the conversation he had with Allen last week.  It is worthwhile to point out that Allen has suffered two concussions during his short tenure in the league.

NFL Pro Bowl
will go on....at least for now.
In sporting news, America’s most popular sport was on the verge of losing its long-standing all-star game.  The National Football League had been contemplating on discontinuing the annual Pro Bowl due largely in part to a lack of competition from the players, even as the most recent Pro Bowl was the most watched all-star game for the 2011 season.  After NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL Players Union met on the situation, it was decided to play the game in 2013 in Hawaii after the players promised the game will be more competitive.  Well, the players should be inspired since it is a paid vacation.
