After 99 years of the running of the Tour de France, Britain finally had a fellow countryman to claim the yellow jersey as Bradley Wiggins won the world’s greatest cycling event.
The National League also had their bats swinging in the Major League Baseball as the LA Dodgers needed 12 innings to outlast the New York Mets 8-3 with 6 runs in the 12th, the San Francisco Giants also needed 12 innings but they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 with Jimmy Rollins’ RBI in the 12th, the Chicago Cubs were manhandled and SHUT OUT by the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals 7-0 as Carlos Beltran belted his 21st homer, the Colorado Rockies lost by a run to the San Diego Padres 3-2, the Houston Astros were blasted as usual by the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-2 with Jason Kubel’s 21st homer, while the Milwaukee Brewers lost 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds as Johnny Ceuto struck out 9 batters, the Atlanta Braves were clobbered by the Washington Nationals 9-2 with two homers from Ryan Zimmerman and the Miami Marlins were SHUT OUT by the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 as Pedro Alavarez belted his 21st homer.
After being stripped of his WBO junior lightweight title due to weighing in more than three pounds overweight, before his next fight, Adrien Broner was worried about that and if he was, he took out on his opponent Vincente Escobedo as Broner earned the TKO in the 5th round as Escobedo’s corner threw in the towel.
There was only one Major League Soccer match last night as the Vancouver Whitecaps got past the San Jose Earthquake 2-1.

Adam Scott reaction to
letting the Claret Jug
slip away

Cough, cough, cough. That’s what happened to Adam Scott at the 141st British Open on Sunday as Scott was four shots ahead with only four holes to play and Scott did the un-thinkable.  He bogeyed them all.  Not one, not two, not three, but all four holes and had to fight back from crying a river on the 18th hole as Ernie Els made his charge earlier and was already in the clubhouse as Els finished with a 7 under par thus claiming his second Claret Jug.  The aforementioned Scott came in 2nd with a 6 under par and Tiger Woods and Brandt Snedeker finished 3 under par tied for third.
Ernie Els captures the Claret Jug
that Adam Scott let slip away

USA Basketball continued their tune-up with a formidable opponent in Argentina as they have Manu Ginobili, Carlos Delfino and Luis Scola, all NBA players on their roster and USA Basketball gave the appearance they would cruise to an easy win but the Argentinians had other plans late in the 4th as they trimmed the lead to 78-74 before Kevin Durant and Chris Paul knocked in 3 pointers to extend the lead and take the in for good 86-80.
Calgary, Alberta was the landing pad for the octagon in UFC 149 as they had a plethora of fights starting with Renan Barao used all his physical advantages to claim to get the unanimous win over Urijah Faber to claim interim bantamweight title, Hector Lombard picked a fine time to have his 25 fight win streak come to an end in his highly anticipated UFC debut as he lost a split decision against Tim Boetsch, while veteran Cheick Kongo captured the unanimous decision over Shawn Jordan.  Take down after takedown by welterweight Brian Ebersole was thwarted by James Head to give Ebersole his first Octagon loss, Matt Clements used his phenomenal grabbling to secure the win over Chris Clements in the 3rd round, while the re-match between middleweight Courts McGee proved to be another loss against Nick Ring in a unanimous decision, and it didn’t take long for Francisco Rivera to honor his mom as his KNOCKED OUT Roland Delorme at the 4:19 mark in the 1st round, Bryan Caraway extended his win streak by three against Mitch Gagnon with a submission in the 3rd and finally, it was the 7 second KNOCK OUT as light heavyweight Ryan Jimmo KNOCK OUT Anthony Perosh in only in 7 seconds and after the fight proceeded to do the robot….and was getting it too!
In sporting news, Mark Emmert, President of the NCAA is expected to dole out the detailed punishment against Penn State at a 9a EST press conference this morning.  Although it’s expected not to be the so called ‘death penalty’ which would have suspended the program for a year, penalties will most likely include, according to sources, significant loss of scholarships and loss of multiple bowl games.  However, with these penalties being so severe, the death penalty would be preferred.

Joe Paterno statue then.....

That old saying of what goes up, must come down was reverberated early Sunday morning as the 7 foot, over 900 pound bronze statue of the late Joe Paterno was taken down after President Rod Erickson decided it was time as the statue will remain in unnamed, secured location.  Ironically, the statue was taken down on the six month anniversary of the passing of Paterno and days after The Freeh Report and I’m certain days to come after the statue was taken down, many will debate, converse and pontificate over the decision to remove the statue.  In his decision to remove the statue Erickson stated “I now believe that, contrary to is original intention, Coach Paterno's statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing in our university and beyond and for that reason, I have decided that it is in the best interest of our university and public safety to remove the statue and store it in a secure location.”
