|Gabby Douglas golden history|
at the London Olympics
Ohhhh what a night for the United States at the 2012 Olympics in London and with so much action, I was befuddled on what to kick off this segment with, but I opt for the phenomenal history making performance of Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas, but you know her as Gabby Douglas as she became the first African-American in Olympic history to win gold in the individual all-around competition and with her gold a few days ago, she became the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics….congratulations Gabby. Heading over to the pool, the smooth stroke of Rebecca Soni set another record by beating her own world record in the 200m Breaststroke to capture gold in 2 minutes, 19.59 seconds and Tyler Clary got the best of Ryan Lochte in the very last lap of the Men’s 200m Backstroke to strike gold in Olympic record fashion with a time of 1 minute, 53.41 seconds and Lochte finished 3rd for bronze.
Michael Phelps was back in action as he accomplished the unprecedented three-peat to win the 200m Individual Medley, to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event in three straight Olympics, outdueling Ryan Lochte, who claimed silver, to finally notch his first individual gold during these Olympics, giving him 20 medals total and 16 of those are gold. Other medal winners from Thursday was Kyla Harrison winning gold in judo for the United States, which is a first and U.S. women's eight that won a second straight Olympic gold in rowing, maintaining a six-year dominance in the event.
Serena Williams continued her march towards gold as she will face off against #1 ranked Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals and Team USA in men’s basketball was pitted against Nigeria and words cannot described, not even my world famous verbiage of literally spanking cannot explain how the United States treated them like step-step-step children and exploded for a record setting 156 points, beating Nigeria by 83 points as they only scored 73. Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points to break the U. S. single game scoring record in less than three quarters and the team also set a record of 26 3 pointers and field goal percentage of 71%. As the deacon in the corner says……my, my, my.
So with an impressive day for the United State, the leader in the medal count has shifted from China to the USA with 18 gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze for a total of 37, while China also has 18 gold, 11 silver and 5 bronze for a total of 34 and Japan added two more for a total of 19 for third.
For your London Olympic News, Olympic officials demanded a deeper investigation into the badminton fixing scandal Thursday as China's coach took the blame for a match being thrown at the London Games and a player appeared to quit the tarnished sport, a boxing referee from Turkmenistan was expelled from the London Olympics on Thursday for his handling of a bout in which the result was overturned on appeal, Hiroshi Hoketsu of Japan became the oldest competitor at the age of 71 at the 2012 London Olympics on Thursday when his horse Whisper cantered into the ring at the equestrian dressage competition at Greenwich Park, some of Britain’s iconic red mailboxes were painted gold Thursday, to celebrate gold medals won by British Olympians, Australian rower Josh Booth was detained by police for causing damage to a storefront in an alcohol-related incident hours after he competed in the men's eight at the Olympics and finally, NBC said Thursday that during the first few days of its Olympics coverage, archery was the most popular sport of any that it aired on its cable networks, even bigger than basketball. Archery averaged 1.5 million viewers when it came on TV. Who knew……huh?!
