Were the Houston Texans
playing in 1961???
The National League were swinging their bats last night in Major League Baseball as the New York Mets pasted the Miami Marlins 5-1 with a Grand Slam from Jason Bay, the defending champs St. Louis Cardinals lost by a run to the Washington Nationals with 6 scoreless innings pitched by Stephan Strasburg, the Cincinnati Reds knocked off the Houston Astros 5-3 as Jay Bruce homered for the 29th time and started a 5 run rally, the  Pittsburgh Pirates were pummeled by the Milwaukee Brewers 12-8 as the Brewers tally 5 homers, the San Francisco Giants got past the Chicago Cubs 7-5, while the runs were a plenty between the San Diego Padres, who scored 10 runs, but the Colorado Rockies did them one better and scored 11 as Tyler Colvin belts his 17th homer, the Arizona Diamondbacks lost by one measly run 5-4 to the LA Dodgers off of Adrian Gonzalez’s walk off 2 run double and the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Atlanta Braves 8-7 as Chipper Jones belts a 3 run homer in the 9th inning.
There is work yet to be done as 20th seeded Andy Roddick held off retirement with another victory at the 2012 US Open in Flushing Meadow as he needed 4 sets against Fabio Fognini 7-5, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 8th seeded Janko Tipsarevic knocks off Grega Zemlja in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 7-5, 7th seeded Juan Martin del Porto got past Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6, while 13th seeded Richard Gasquet defeated Steve Johnson in straight sets 7-6, 6-2, 6-3, 18th seeded Stanislas Wawrinka outlasted 14th seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, 2nd seeded Novak Djokovic cruised to victory over 31st seeded Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 and 4th seeded David Ferrer required 4 sets of work to knock of Lleyton Hewitt 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Round 3 concluded at the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston with a barrage of birdies from Louis Oosthuizen as he finished atop of the leaderboard with a 19 under par, Rory McIlroy is 2nd with 16 under par, Dustin Johnson and Tiger Woods are 6 shots back sitting on 13 under par and there are a couple of players tied for 5th at 11 under par.
Major League Soccer kicked around the ball last night with three games scheduled as the Chicago fire ran away from the Houston Dynamo 3-1, FC Dallas played to a 1-1 tie against the Seattle Sounders FC and San Jose Earthquake SHUT OUT Chivas USA 4-0.
For your NFL Quick Hits, Shad Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars indicated the train was leaving and Maurice Jones-Drew should get on board and that’s exactly what he did yesterday as Jones-Drew ended his 38 day holdout and reported to the team, without a new deal, after being cut by the Denver Broncos on Friday, the Detroit Lions agreed to terms with veteran cornerback Drayton Florence on Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens have signed former New England Patriots safety James Ihedigbo, the Panthers parted ways Sunday with defensive tackle Terrell McClain and replaced him with free agent Dwan Edwards, an eight-year veteran who was cut Friday by the Buffalo Bills and finally, it’s hard to win the AFC Championship when the team did not exist, but according to an Old Navy T-shirt, the Houston Texans did just that even though team was not playing way back when you were a twinkle in your momma and daddy’s eyes……huh?!

Denny Hamlin captures the
checkered flag under the lights
at Atlanta Motor Speedway
Once, twice, three times a errrrr…..make that four times a win as Denny Hamlin was cruising last night at Atlanta Motor Speedway to capture his 2nd consecutive checkered flag as he held off Jeff Gordon, who desperately needed a win to make the NASCAR’s version of the playoffs.  But with the win, Hamlin has no worries in making the playoffs as he positioned himself 7th in the standings, while Jeff Gordon finished 2nd, Brad Keselowski placed 3rd, Martin Truex, Jr. rolled into 4th place and Kevin Harvick rounds out the top five.
With another round of racing in tank, the Sprint Cup Standings points shuffled only slightly as Greg Biffle maintained the top spot with 879 points, Dale Earnhardt, Jr is now 2nd with 871 points, Matt Kenseth moves up to the 3rd spot with 858 points, while Jimmie Johnson falls to 4th with 848 and Martin Truex, Jr increased his points to 838, but still but holds down the 5th spot.
The ladies of the WNBA had two games on the hardwood last night as the Angel McCoughtry fresh off a two game suspension brought her A game as she dominated with 24 points off the bench to lead the Atlanta Dream over the Connecticut Sun 87-80 and the LA Sparks lost their 2nd game in row as they were defeated by the Chicago Sky 85-74 as Epiphany Prince, I love saying that name, lead the charge with 17 points and missed a double-double by one assist, as she dished out 9 dimes.
Major League Baseball had plenty of action in both leagues starting with American League as the Baltimore Orioles walloped the New York Yankees 8-3 as Mark Reynolds knocks out 2 homers, the Texas Rangers also pummeled the Cleveland Indians with a score of 8-3 as Jurickson Profar homered in his first plate appearance, the Tampa Bay Rays crushed the Toronto Blue Jays 9-4 as David Price notches his 17th win, the Minnesota Twins lost to the Kansas City Royals 6-4 as they avoid the series sweep, while the Boston Red Sox continued their losing streak against the Oakland A’s 6-2 as Stephen Drew belts his 1st homerun, the LA Angels was defeated 2-1 by the Seattle Mariners with a homer from Jesus Montero and the Chicago White Sox lost against the Detroit Tigers 4-2 as Delmon Young launches his 17th homerun.
The 2012 U. S. Open is getting down to the nitty gritty for the women as 11th seeded Marion Bartoli UPSET 5th seeded Petra Kvitova in 3 sets 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, 7th seeded Samantha Stosur needed only 2 sets to get the win over Laura Robson 6-4, 6-1, while #1 seeded Victoria Azarenka routed Anna Tatishvili 6-2, 6-2 and 3rd seeded Maria Sharapova struggled against 19th seeded Nadia Petrova but prevailed in 3 sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Alan Oliveira dethrones
Oscar Pistorius in the 200m
First time for everything as the feel good story of the 2012 London Games in Oscar Pistorius lost for the first time in the 200m at the London Para Olympics to Brazilian Alan Oliveira seven tenths of a second and Pistorious expressed his displeasure after the race due to the height advantage that caused him to lose his first 200m race.

Lawsuit To Pay NCAA Athletes, NHRA, Oscar De La Hoya, Dwight Howard & Luke Donald: 9/3, Vol. 220, 3rd Edition

Hello Fear, I knew I would see you, you have a hard time letting go; see these tears, take a good look cuz, soon they won’t fall anymore. God's healing my hurtful places and that seat that was yours now is taken!  For your Spiritual Sports Segment on Rhema Gospel Radio, I’m C.E.E.J.A.Y.

Suit aimed to pay NCAA
athletes for their images
A lawsuit aimed to pay college players has taken a slight twist.  Instead of seeking to pay college players for their efforts on the field, the lawsuit was tweaked to pay college athletes for use of their images.  Attorneys argued that television, video games, and other products that generate money from the use of athletes’ images, should be shared with the players and if the NCAA need to abide by the spirit of amateur sports, then money can be held in trust until the athletes end their collegiate careers.  No monetary figures were made available in the public filing of the suit, but indicated that football players could earn tens of thousands of dollars.  However, the NCAA chief counsel thinks the twist lacks merit.
For your Quick News & Notes, Angelica Cecora who claimed to have been intimidated by boxer Oscar De La Hoya during a wild night at a New York City hotel has now been ordered to pay his legal bill of $12,0000, after a judge said her lawsuit was "frivolous" and malicious, after a controversial restart, Ryan Hunter-Reay celebrated his perfect timing and a much-needed victory as the Grand Prix of Baltimore on Sunday, Jenson Button coasted to his second victory of the season on Sunday at the Belgian Grand Prix that was marred with wrecks, remnants of Hurricane Isaac reached Indiana on Sunday, with steady rain and standing water forcing NHRA officials to cancel the final two qualifying sessions for the U.S. Nationals and will take place on today, Ryan Dungey raced to his ninth consecutive AMA Pro Motocross victory Saturday, sweeping the 450 Class motos at Steel City Raceway while also capturing #3 on the all-time wins list, Office Depot, co-primary sponsor for Tony Stewart's #14 Chevrolet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series since Stewart took over the team in 2009, will not return in that capacity in 2013, a team spokesman confirmed, Arizona State coach Herb Sendek made a bold move to save a struggling program by hiring two professional coaches as assistants, Larry Greer  and Eric Musselman.
Southern California athletic director Pat Haden says USC will investigate a Los Angeles Times report claiming former football player Joe McKnight and former basketball player Davon Jefferson, received gifts from an employee of the Los Angeles County assessor's office, USC Trojans guard Maurice Jones, the Trojans' leading scorer in 2011-2012, is academically ineligible for the upcoming season, the school announced Saturday night and can re-apply after this semester, after being injured in the first game of the season, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said starting quarterback Connor Shaw can barely lift his right arm and will miss the next few days of practice, after finally departing from my beloved home city Orlando Magic, Dwight Howard, who was traded to by beloved LA Lakers, took out a full-page advertisement in Sunday's Orlando Sentinel that read in part “Words cannot express the love that I have for Orlando. With your support we have done great things in this city from hanging banners to impacting our youth”,  and finally, Luke Donald apologized Sunday for criticizing golf course architect Gil Hanse in a tweet that was meant to be private…..well, as coach Herm Edwards always say, make sure read it again before you press send……huh!?
