US Open, Monday Night Football, WNBA Inspire Luncheon, AL MLB Scores & AL Standings: 9/11, Vol. 226, 1st Edt'n

Sometimes you have to encourage yourself. Sometimes you have to speak victory during the test.  And no matter how you feel, speak the word and you will be healed; speak over yourself, encourage yourself in the Lord!  Good morning and welcome back to your Spiritual Sports Segment on Rhema on Gospel Radio better than when you it yesterday! I’m C.E.E.J.A.Y!  Here We Go!  And before I kick off this the sports segment, let us not forget those who lost their lives as victims and those who lost their lives as hero’s during September 11th…..may God rest their souls in peace…..and God Bless America!

Andy Murray gets one a best
kisses of his life after winning
the US Open
What a year it has been for Great Britain’s 3rd seeded Andy Murray who won a gold medal during the 2012 London Olympics and until yesterday, it had been 76 years since a British man won a Grand Slam singles championship, but Murray brought that drought to an end as he outlasted and ousted 2nd seeded Novak Djokovic and captured the 2012 US Open in 5 sets 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2.
Monday Night Football kicked off last night with a double header as the Cincinnati Bengals was annihilated by the Baltimore Ravens 44-13 with 299 passing yards from Joe Flanco to go along with his 2 TD’s and Ed Reed did what Ed Reed does as he became the NFL leader for interception return yards, after pick 6’ing and interception for 34 yards and the California Battle between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders witnessed the Chargers starting the season off right with a 22-14 win against those Raiders as Philip Rivers threw for 231 yards and one score.
There were only 10 games total in Major League Baseball as the American League had only 3 of them starting with the Detroit Tigers getting blasted by the Chicago White Sox 6-1 with A. J. Pierzynski’s 26th homer, the Cleveland Indians hammered by the Minnesota Twins 7-2 as Lonnie Chisenahall went yard and the Oakland A’s knocked off the LA Angels 3-1 as Brandon Moss belts his 17th homerun.
As the Hunt for October is just around the corner, the American League standings have the New York Yankees atop the of the East, but only by one game over the Baltimore Orioles, the Chicago White Sox leads the Central with the Detroit Tigers 3 games behind and the Texas Rangers lead the West as the Oakland A’s are also 3 games back.

Venus Williams at the WNBA
Inspire Luncheon
The WNBA was off last night as far as business on the basketball court, but they were on duty off the court in New York as they honored the outstanding women of US Olympic Team, who proudly brought home 58 of the United States 104 medals, with their Inspiration Award.  The women were honored at the WNBA’s Inspiring Women Luncheon by WNBA president Laurel Richie, who lead the charge in recognizing their accomplishments stated in part “You are an inspiration to the next generation of young girls who we know were glued to their TV sets and their iPads and iPods and all other devices, and they watched you compete. You have shown what women can be as athletes and what athletes can be as citizens."  Tennis star Venus Williams also attended the luncheon credited Title IX for providing her with the opportunities that she has experienced.  And speaking of Title IX, if you missed my commentary on the 40th Anniversary of Title IX, appropriately titled Thank God for Title IX, please log onto my blogsite at ceejaysports.com and click on the Commentary Corner link.

For your NFL Quick Hits, NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith sent a letter on Monday to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell that outlines the union's expectation for the process that should be followed in determining the ultimate fate of former and current New Orleans Saints players suspended for their alleged involvement in the bounty scandal and according to sources, contain the following elements:
  • reaffirm the players' contention no pay-to-injure program existed
  • player’s must have a full opportunity to present their cases and cross-examine evidence and witnesses
  • expressed a continued willingness to engage in settlement negotiations as the courts have recommended
The NFL on the other hand, sent a letter to the union Monday stating its willingness to meet with any player who wants to submit information regarding the bounty scandal and if they wish to do so, must do it by close of business today.  The New Orleans Saints have placed Jonathan Vilma on the physically unable to perform list, a move that will sideline the recently reinstated linebacker for at least five more games, with no resolution to talks between the NFL and its locked-out referees in sight, the league has devised a schedule for replacement referees through the first five weeks of the season, a league official told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Monday, after losing his appeal, Cleveland Browns Joe Haden was suspended Monday without pay for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances, Darelle Revis' status for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers is uncertain after the New York Jet cornerback sustained a mild concussion last Sunday, and finally, the NFL has admitted that a mistake by the clock operator in Sunday's last-second loss at Detroit basically gave the Lions gave an extra timeout against the St. Louis Rams.
