Rd. 1 of NFL, WNBA Playoffs, ALDS & MLS Scores: 10/8, Vol. 243, 1st Edition

The National Football League had it going on yesterday as I kick off your Round One NFL scores as the Atlanta Falcons battered and bruised the Washington Redskins to improve to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history as Matt Ryan continued his air assault with 345 yards and 2 TD’s and on a side note, Robert Griffin, III, quarterback for the Redskins was knocked out of the game with a concussion, the Seattle Seahawks got past the Carolina Panthers 16-12 as the Seahawks defense was swarming as they overcame 2 INT’s by Russell Wilson, the Chicago Bears literally spanked the Jacksonville Jaguars 41-3 with 292 yards from Jay Cutler along with 2 scores, the Minnesota Vikings simply manhandled the Tennessee Titans 30-7l as Percy Harvin notched 108 receiving yards and 2 scores, with one coming from rushing the ball, while the Denver Broncos defense and fumbles helped the New England Patriots get the 31-21 win as Tom Brady passed for 223 yards and a score and the Buffalo Bills was literally spanked 45-3 by the San Francisco 49er’s and Alex Smith was hot with 303 yards and not one, not two, but not three TD’s.

The Ladies of the WNBA had one playoff game on the hard-court yesterday as the defending champs Minnesota Lynx eked out a one point win over the LA Sparks 80-79 despite a huge game from Candace Parker, but the Lynx were led by Semione Augustus’ 21 points and Maya Moore chipped in 20 points as the Lynx get a chance to defend their title.

The American League playoffs continued in the Major League Baseball as the Oakland A’s lost to the Detroit Tigers 5-4 as the Tigers take a 2-0 series lead with the help of Don Kelly’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th and the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles kicked off their ALDS and the game was locked in a 2-2 tie until Russell Martin belted a tie breaking homer in the 9th and the Yankees went on to crush the O’s 7-2 to take 1-0 series lead.

Major League Soccer had a few games kicking around last night as the Columbus Crew played to a 1-1 tie against the Sporting Kansas City, Chivas USA also play to a 1-1 tie against FC Dallas and the Seattle Sounders FC SHUT OUT the Portland Timbers 3-0.

For Round Two of your NFL scores, the Miami Dolphins escape Cincinnati with a win over the Bengals as Ryan Tannehill passed for 223 yards and Reggie Bush rushed for a score, the Indianapolis Colts edged out the Green Bay Packers in a stunner 30-27 as Andrew Luck threw a career high 362 yards and notched the Colts record for the most passing yards by a rookie and added 2 TD’s as well, the Baltimore Ravens got the ugly 9-6 win over the Kansas City Chiefs with 102 rushing yards from Ray Rice, while the Cleveland Browns was demolished by the New York Giants 41-27 as Eli Manning threw the rock for 259 yards and not one, not two, but three TD’s, with all the TD’s going to Victor Cruz, a career high and Ahmand Bradshaw was a beast with career best 200 ground pounding yards, the Pittsburgh Steelers rallied past the Philadelphia Eagles 16-14 in a last second field goal along with a rushing score from Rashard Mendenhall and in the Sunday Night featured game, the San Diego Chargers and the New Orleans Saints were putting up some major points but it was the Saints rallying past the Chargers 31-24 as Drew Brees had a career record breaking night as he broke Johnny Unitas’ record for most games with a TD pass and Brees was en fuego with 370 yards and not uno, not dos, not even tres, but quarto TD’s and Marques Colston wasn’t too shabby as well with 131 receiving yards and 3 TD’s.

The National League Playoffs kicked off the NLDS for the Washington Nationals as they got the one run win over the defending champs 3-2 as the Nationals take a 1-0 series lead and it was Game 2 as the Cincinnati Reds SHUT OUT and literally spanked the San Francisco Giants 9-0 as Ryan Hanigan drove in 3 RBI’s as the Reds take a 2-0 series lead.

NASCAR was burning up the track at Talladega Superspeedway in the Chase for the Sprint Cup as Tony Stewart caused a 25 car pile-up that witnessed 10 of the 12 title contenders tangled in the crash as Matt Kenseth captured the checkered flag under caution.  With Brad Keselowski finishing 7th, he held onto the #1 spot in the Chase, Jimmie Johnson is holding down the 2nd spot, Denny Hamlin is 20 points behind for 3rd, while Kasey Kahne and Clint Bowyer both are tied for 4th and Jeff Gordan is 42 points behind at #6.

For your NFL Quick Hits, after  Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata knocked out quarterback Matt Cassell of the Kansas City Chiefs, fans who were calling for Cassell to be benched, cheered as right tackle Eric Winston called it “It's 100 percent sickening", Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith was ejected Sunday in the game against Tennessee Titans after pushing an official who was trying to break up an on-field altercation, The NFL is investigating why Mario Williams, who landed $50 million in guaranteed money this offseason, has publicly complained about his wrist as recently as this week, yet he still is not on Buffalo's injury report, and finally, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu left in the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday with a right calf injury on a non-contact play when he returns to the game is questionable to return.

          College football wrapped up Week 6 and there were some UPSETS in the AP Top 25 that caused a little Shuffling to take place as Alabama continues to reign supreme at #1 and Oregon maintained their 2nd position ranking, but things start to shuffle at the 3rd spot as Georgia vacates and South Carolina takes up residency, up from #6, Florida climbed the totem pole from 10th to 4th, while West Virginia jumped up from 8th to 5th, Kansas State move up one spot to #6, Norte Dame continue a steady climb from 9th to 7th, while Ohio State picked up their luggage and to move into the Top 10 neighborhood at #8, LSU suffered a major drop after being UPSET by Florida from #4 to #9 and Oregon State cracked the Top 10 from 14th to 10th .  With all the shuffling to occur, some room had to be made as 15th ranked TCU, 21st ranked Nebraska, 23rd ranked Washington and 25th ranked UCLA all dropped and crashed from the AP Top 25.

For your Olympic Sporting News, Lance Armstrong has competed in a triathlon after organizers dropped USA Triathlon sanctioning so he could take part and Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia shattered the course record while winning the Chicago Marathon on Sunday morning with a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, 38 seconds, which easily eclipsed the previous mark of 2:05:37.
