The Father of the MLBPA, Marvin Miller passes at the age of 95
In
sporting news, you would think the man known as ‘The Father of the MLBPA’ would
have his named enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, but if you know
baseball, you would know better. Marvin
Miller, former executive director of the player’s union passed away at the
tender age of 95 as his Manhattan home yesterday. Miller was largely responsible for athletes
becoming millionaires as he led baseball players in a series of strikes and
legal battles that won free agency.
Under his leadership, he would not only revolutionize baseball, but the
entire sports world as he changed the business of sports and according to
former baseball commissioner Fay Vincent, he “emancipated the baseball player
and in the process, all professional athletes.”
Miller led the first walk out in 1972 and under his leadership; Major
League Baseball witnessed revenue skyrocketing from $50 million in 1967 to well
over $7 billion dollars today. However,
with all his accomplishments not only in game of baseball, but with other
sports that benefited from his pioneering efforts, baseball’s Hall of Fame has
shut the door on him. Rest in peace
Marvin and perhaps the Hall of Fame will finally give you your flowers that you
well deserve.
