2017 Celebration Bowl: SWAC vs MEAC
As mentioned in the intro, The SWAC Football Championship pitted the Tigers of Grambling State facing off against the Braves of Alcorn State and this game was billed as The Final Judgement as this will be the last SWAC Championship Football Game played PERIOD. The SWAC announced back in June of this year that it will no longer have a championship game with the creation of the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl in Atlanta on December 16 and starting next year, the SWAC Football Champion will be determined by which school has the best regular season record.

QB Devante Kincade MVP
But nonetheless comma I digress as Grambling struck first early in the 1st quarter to begin the game at 7 - 0, but Alcorn said not so fast my friend and scored about five minutes later and at the end of the 1st, they were tied at 10 all and in the 2nd quarter, it was all Grambling State as they scored 28 consecutive points primarily behind their dynamic quarterback Devante Kincade, who finished the game with 223 passing yards and 2 TD’s and 75 rushing yards and again, 2 TD’s and he was also named the games Offensive MVP, but he eventually left the game due to a minor head injury and the Tigers would lead 38 – 10.

Broderick Fobbs
SWAC Coach of the Year
But the momentum shifted in the 4th as the Braves mounted a comeback and scored 22 points as they had the fans of GSU a little nervous, but Grambling held on for the win 40 – 32 as they capture the last game played for the SWAC Championship. During the postgame presser, I asked Grambling’s Head Coach Broderick Fobbs, who was awarded the SWAC Coach of the Year, my question and the coaches response is audio only.

With Grambling State winning their 2nd consecutive SWAC Championship, they will now travel to Atlanta to tangle with North Carolina A&T, the MEAC Champion, in the Celebration Bowl aka the HBCU Bowl on December 16.

The Bayou Classic 2017
The SWAC in Week 13 was the only major HBCU Football Conference that witnessed games on the gridiron yesterday as I kick it off with The Bayou Classic at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in the N. O. as Grambling matched up against Southern as they were competing to advance to the last SWAC Championship game to be held right here in the City of Houston on Saturday, December 2, but I digress as the game was close with less than five minutes remaining until Martez Carter ran it in from 11 yards for the score and he finished with 92 rushing yards and scored another TD on a catch and quarterback Devante Kincaide threw for 171 yards and the aforementioned TD and also ran it in for a score as Grambling knock off Southern 30 – 21 to move on to the SWAC Championship to face off against Alcorn State.

Niko Hollins passed for 3 TD's!!
The only other game on tap, which I covered at BBVA Compass Stadium, was a rescheduled game due to Hurricane Harvey as Texas Southern was trying wrap up their season in a positive manner against their in state rival in Prairie View. TSU would strike first with a field goal and after that, they were playing from behind the entire game as Prairie View, despite 17 penalties for 179 yards, used the arm of quarterback Neiko Hollins to pass for 319 yard and not one, not two, but three TD’s as PV went on to crush TSU 30 – 16 to claim bragging rights for the next year.

The SWAC was running and gunning with several games yesterday and unlike the MEAC, they have one more week to play, but I digress as Alabama A&M cruised past Kentucky State 21 – 13 with two scores from quarterback Dylan Smith, Alabama State got past Mississippi Valley State 16 – 10 as Hunter Hanson booted not one, not two, but three…wait for it…field goals! In the Battle of the Sip, Jackson State UPSET the SWAC East Division Champion Alcorn State in a blow out game 7 – 3, as Terrell Kennedy caught what ended up being the game winning TD and finally, Texas Southern befuddled Arkansas-Pine Bluff 24 – 10 with Brad Woodard running amuck for 128 yards and score.

The conference standings in the SWAC still have Grambling ruling the land overall and in the West at 7-0 and Southern at 5-1 and in the East, Alcorn State has a record of 6-2 and Alabama A&M at 3-3. As mentioned earlier, Alcorn State will be in the SWAC Championship game in December and they will play either Grambling or Southern, which they are due face off against one another next weekend.

You did not create me to worry….you did not create me to fear! You created me worship daily, so I’m going to leave it all right here!

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening! Whichever time of day you find your ears listening to the sound that is flowing from your speakers! This is CeeJay, C-E-E-J-A-Y! It’s Week 12 in college football and the MEAC had their plate full of games as it was the last weekend for the regular season which in some cases meant Rivalry Week, but I start with Florida State with their losing record hosted their cupcake in Delaware State and the Seminoles ate good as they blasted the Hornets 77 – 6, Hampton U and Howard U faced off in the The Battle of Real HU as Hampton edged Howard 20 – 17 as Yahkee Johnson rushed the rock for 144 yards and two scores in what could be the last match up between the schools as Hampton announced earlier in the week they are leaving the MEAC for the Big South Conference. Norfolk State hung 45 points against Morgan State’s 32 points with two rushing scores from Aaron Savage. Meanwhile, undefeated North Carolina A&T hosted their rival in North Carolina Central and A&T muscled passed Central 24 – 10 as Marquell Wright knocked down the goal line door with two rushing scores as A&T outright claims the MEAC title, Savannah State demolished, decimated and dominated, Alliteration, I Love It, their rival in South Carolina State 34 – 10 as freshman quarterback D’Vonn Gibbons threw for 267 yards and two TD’s and finally, the Florida Classic in my home state pitted FAMU against Bethune Cookman and at the top of the 4th quarter, the Rattlers were taming the Wildcats 24 – 10, but a 19 point swing by The Mighty Wildcats snatched the venom and victory from the Rattlers 29 – 24 as Larry Brihm, Jr passed for 280 yards and accounted for not one, not two, but three TD’s, one in air and two on the ground as Bethune won their 7th consecutive Florida Classic.

Here are your final MEAC standings as mentioned earlier, A&T finished with an undefeated season, Howard and Bethune Cookman finished tied at 6-2 and Central and Hampton also tied and finished with a record of 5-3.

Much like the MEAC, the SWAC likewise had five games on tap as Christian Jacquemin booted a field goal as time expired to give Jackson State the 10 – 7 win over Alabama A&M, Prairie View pounded, pummeled and pasted, Alliteration, I Love It, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 35 – 12 as quarterback Neiko Hollins put on an exhibition with 410 yards and not one, not two, not three, but four TD’s! Meanwhile, Grambling’s quarterback Devante Kincade notched 205 yards with two scores to help wallop Alabama State 24 – 7, meanwhile, over in the Sip, Alcorn State SHUT OUT Mississippi Valley State 59 – 0, 59 – zilch, 59 – nothing….ouch! Needless to say, there was a lot of scoring so everybody gets a mention….Ha! Finally, the SWAC matchup in which My Bride and I attended thanks to Texas Southern’s Sports Information Director Mr. Andrew Roberts, Jr, provided an up close view of the game from BBVA Compass Stadium, as Southern faced off against TSU and despite the lopsided win for Southern 33 – 7, the Tigers of TSU never gave in a fought to the bitter end as Hebert Edwards rushed for 159 yards and a score.

The conference standings in the SWAC still have Grambling ruling the land overall and in the West at 7-0 and Southern at 5-1 and in the East, Alcorn State has a record of 6-1 and Alabama A&M at 3-3.

Since it was Week 11 in college football, the MEAC had a full slate of games popping off as quarterback Caylin Newton scored with five seconds left the game to seal the deal as Howard got past Norfolk State 28 – 24 with running back Anthony Philyaw rumbling and tumbling to 193 yards and 2 TD’s. North Carolina A&T keeps rolling along as they put the smack down on Savannah State 36 - 17 as quarterback Lamar Raynard was stellar yet again with 252 yards and 2 TD’s, meanwhile, over in the Palmetto State aka South Carolina, Hampton was crushed by South Carolina State 33 – 15 with LeBron Morris rushing the rock for two scores and 134 yards, while Delaware State rallied and needed a two point conversion to take down Morgan State 33 – 30 as Keenan Black, despite an interception, threw for 234 yards and not one, not two, not even three, but four touchdowns and finally, North Carolina Central and Bethune Cookman were locked in a defensive battle since the first score didn’t come until the 3rd quarter with BCU striking first, but with five seconds left in the game and Central up 13 – 10, the Mighty threw a Hail Mary and after a couple bobbles, the Wildcats came away with the ball and a walk off TD and notched the win 13 – 10.

Here is a run-down of the MEAC conference standings and North Carolina A&T still sit atop of the mountain at 6-0, followed by Howard at #2 at 6-1 and tied at 5-2 is Bethune Cookman and North Carolina Central.

Nonetheless comma I digress as Savannah State muscled past Delaware State 35 – 21 with 126 yards on ground from running back D’vonn Gibbons and 2 TD’s and finally, the Mighty Wildcats of Bethune Cookman decimated, dominated and devastated, Alliteration, I Love It Morgan State 41 – 28 as Larry Brihm, Jr. passed for 354 yards and matched a 1984 school record of uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco TD’s…a little love for my Latino and Hispanic brothers & sisters!

Popping 90’s over to the SWAC as they likewise had five games on the gridiron as Texas Southern notched their first win of the season by hammering Mississippi Valley State 38 – 21 as quarterback Elijah Odom rushed the rock for 172 yards and two touchdowns, Alabama A&M was smothered like some pork chops by Alcorn State 47 – 22 as P. The College Football season for Week 7 was in full action yesterday as there was six games on the gridiron in the MEAC and the Mighty Wildcats of Bethune Cookman battled against North Carolina A&T, one of the undefeated teams in the MEAC, and held their own but fell 24 – 20 as quarterback Lamar Raynard threw not one, not two, but three TD’s to remain undefeated, Hampton led by QB Caylin Newton, who accounted for uno, dos, tres, quarto TD’s, two in the air and two on the ground as they steamrolled Morgan State 39- 14. Over in the sticks of North Cackalacka, Norfolk State got passed North Carolina Central 28 – 21 to hand them their first loss in the MEAC as quarterback Juwan Carter tossed the rock for 230 yards and a whopping 4 TD’s, Delaware State eked out a win over South Carolina State 17 – 14 with 218 passing yards and 2 touchdowns from Keenan Black, meanwhile, Florida A&M tried to muster a comeback against Hampton, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 31 – 27 despite 3 touchdown tosses from FAMU’s quarterback and finally, Savannah State suffered complete domination against Charleston Southern 52 – 27 as the team registered over 300 ground pounding rushing yards.

Over in the SWAC, they had a light schedule with only three games on tap as Grambling put an old fashion whooping on Alcorn State 41 – 14 as Devante Kincaid threw for 268 yards and 2 touchdowns, instead of being on the consistent end of getting a crushed, Mississippi Valley State did some crushing of their own as they squashed and mashed Lynchburg 53 – one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi, four Mississippi….five! Wow! 53 – 5 with 3 TD’s from wide receiver Booker Chambers and finally, Jackson State is begging and pleading for the season to over hova as they lost for the seventh consecutive game 35 - 17, this time against Southern with 163 bruising rushing yards from Hebert Edwards and a score.

I would be remiss if I didn’t give a sprinkle to the Houston Astros as they SHUT OUT the New York Yankees 4 – zip, 4 – zero, 4 - zil to advance to the World Series for the second time in the club’s history as Jose Altuve’s came up big in the 5th inning with a homerun and Jason Verlander was awarded ACLS MVP and first pitch of the World Series will be thrown on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

NBA Kick Off For The 2017 - 18 Season Feat. Scores, Highlights, An Encouraging Word & Some Old School! Vol. 2, 30th Edition

You are Alpha & Omega, we worship You our Lord, You are worthy to be praised! We give you all the glory, we worship You our Lord, You are worthy to be praised!

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening! Whichever time of day you find your ears listening to the sound that is flowing from your speakers! Welcome back to CeeJay’s Spiritual Sports Segment featuring the NBA Kick Off Edition on ceejaysports.com where I Sprinkle a Little Spiritually in your Sports! I’m Cee Jay, C-E-E-J-A-Y! Your uncle, your next door neighbor looking out for ya and your shoulder, when you need to lean! Without further delay, Let’s Tip Off!!!

The 1st meeting between
LeBron & Kyrie
The 2017 – 18 NBA season tipped off last night to what should be an exciting season as only four teams were on the hard court as the new look Boston Celtics traveled to the defending Eastern Conference Champions in the Cleveland Cavaliers! The home crowd didn’t have any love lost for Kyrie Irvin who requested a trade and found himself in Celtic green going against his former team. With Boston holding an early 12 – 9 lead at the 6:49 mark, the prized free agent jewel for the Celtics in Gordon Hayward, went up for an ally oop, but came down awkwardly and suffered a horrific injury that resulted in a fractured tibia and dislocated ankle on his left leg that left his teammates and Cavs players alike in total shock. Prayers up Gordon! As you can imagine, it would not only be a line up adjustment for the Celtics, but also an emotional and mental one as they found themselves down 54 – 38 at halftime. But in the 3rd quarter, the Celtic Pride battled back and was only down by one at the conclusion of that frame and midway through the 4th, the Celtics garnished their first lead since the 1st, but eventually, the Cavs flexed their muscles and took the lead back late in the frame and maintained it for the win. LeBron James nearly had a triple-double with 29 points, 16 rebounds and 9 assists and Dwayne Wade logged 8 points in his debut with his third team as the Cavs win their home opener 102 – 99.

James Harden spoiled
the Warriors Championship night
The Warriors 2016 -17
Championship Ring
Jet setting over to the West Coast as the new look Houston Rockets had to witness the Golden State Warriors receive what they are chasing, their Championship Rings for the 2017 season. But it’s a new season, but early on, it was the same ole Warriors as they came out to play and were up early 22 – 9, but the Rockets blast back and were only down by 1 at the end of the 1st and by halftime, the Warriors would lead 72 – 61. Not much would change in the 3rd quarter as the Warriors would lead 101 – 88, but one major change did occur as Draymond Green, the reigning Defensive Player of Year, who nearly finished with a triple-double with 9 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds, would exit the game with a sprained left knee and would not return and that changed the complexion of the game. By the closing seconds of the final frame, the Rockets had tied the game 121 all and with a baseline swish from Kevin Durant as time expired, the Warriors thought they had staved off a lost. In the words of Lee Corso, not so fast my friend as the time showed he did not get the shot off and James Harden, who finished with a double-double with 27 points and 10 dimes, eventually sealed the deal with a trey as the Rockets spoil the Warriors ring ceremony with a slim 122 – 121 win as newly acquired Rocket Chris Paul, sat the bench during the final minutes with a sore knee finished with 4 points and 11 assists.

Week 7 kicked off in the MEAC with six games on the gridiron starting with Savanah State putting up 28 points on the board but were manhandled by Morgan State’s 48 points as Elijah Staley threw for 220 yards and not one, not two, but three TD’s! Tyrell Maxwell of Gardner Webb ran amuck over North Carolina Central’s defense for 165 yards and 2 scores, but guess what? What? It wasn’t enough as Central outlasted G-Dub 24 – 17 as Chauncey Caldwell threw for 333 yards and two scores. Over in Dover, DE, Howard dismantled, distinguished and decimated, Alliteration, I Love It, Delaware State 52 – 23 as Cam Newton’s little brother Caylin was Little Superman himself with 285 passing yards with two TD’s and he also rushed for 81 with one going for 59 loooong yards. Meanwhile, in my old stomping grounds in Norfolk, Hampton sneaked passed Norfolk State 16 – 14 as Shai McKenzie rushed for two TD’s. Over on the hills of Tallahassee, FL, North Carolina A&T cruised past Florida A&M 31 – 20 as quarterback Lamar Raynard tossed the rock for 215 yards and trifecta of TD’s and finally, of the Bethune Cookman University eked out a close one 12 – 9 over South Carolina State as kicker Uriel Hernandez saved the day with four field goals.

There were only five games in the SWAC as Alcorn State muscled passed Prairie View A&M 31 – 24 as Noah Johnson only rushed for five yards, but had two TD’s! Alabama A&M literally spanked Mississippi Valley State 49 – 14 as QB Damion May accounted for two passing scores and two rushing scores….talk about putting in work! Texas Southern celebrated their 90th anniversary, but it was spoiled by a 23 – 16 defeat against Alabama State with two passing touchdowns from Daryl Pearson, Jr of the Hornets. Meanwhile, Central State put 40 points on board against the 35 points from Arkansas-Pine Bluff and was victorious behind 334 passing yards from Trent Mays and a score and finally, Jackson State will stay stuck on zero wins after they were crushed by Tuskegee 33 – 7 with two passing TD’s from Jarmarcus Ezell.

Week 7 standings in the MEAC have North Carolina A&T on top and undefeated followed by Central, Hampton, Howard, Bethune Cookman and Norfolk State.

In the SWAC East, Alcorn State is on the top of the mountain followed by Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley State and in the West, Grambling is undefeated with Prairie close behind.

Words cannot truly express the magnitude of my first official event as a member of the media for the 93rd running of the Annual State Fair Classic sponsored by Southwest Airlines but I digress for the moment and will come back to that!

The game between the Panthers of Prairie View A&M University and the Tigers of Grambling State University played out on the gridiron yesterday at the historic Cotton Bowl nested inside the Texas State Fair! Both teams entered the game 2 – 0 in the SWAC Conference West Division and each was on a winning streak of their own. However comma Grambling was plagued by penalties entering the game and the plague continued as the Tigers amassed 17 penalties for 132 yards compared to the Panthers 11 penalties for only 68 yards and THAT kin folks comes down to discipline. Both teams had similar stats, but it was the running game from Grambling that really set the tone as they rushed the rock for 154 yards compared to PV’s only 12 yards….ouch! The bulk of the rushing yards came from Martez Carter as he steamrolled the Panthers defense for 124 yards and a TD, but the Panthers would go away without a fight. Speaking of defense, Grambling’s defense snatched the ball from Prairie View’s offense by causing three turnovers and garnered three sacks on the Panthers quarterback and Grambling’s quarterback, Devante Kincaide was on F.I.Y.A on fiya! He was efficient with a 200.7 passing rating and 265 yards and not one, not two, but three TD’s as Grambling won their fourth straight Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic as they manhandled Prairie View 34 – 21. Grambling State now moves to 3 – 0 in the conference and 5 – 1 overall as they sit atop the West division.

Now back to my first official event as a member of the media and it was such a blast to interact with staff, media members and most importantly, the fans, especially Nicole and Secret….shhhhh, keep that on the low, low! Let me get out here!

Charleston South journeyed down to the Sip and simply powered passed, pummeled and pasted, Alliteration, I Love It, Mississippi Valley State 58 – 7 as running back Terrence Wilson only rushed twice but amassed 106 yards with two TD’s and the Buccaneers had a total of 359 rushing yards on the day…ooohhweee!
