2017 Celebration Bowl: SWAC vs MEAC |
As mentioned in the intro, The SWAC Football
Championship pitted the Tigers of Grambling State facing off against the Braves
of Alcorn State and this game was billed as The Final Judgement as this will be
the last SWAC Championship Football Game played PERIOD. The SWAC announced back
in June of this year that it will no longer have a championship game with the
creation of the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl in Atlanta on December 16
and starting next year, the SWAC Football Champion will be determined by which
school has the best regular season record.

QB Devante Kincade MVP |
But nonetheless comma I digress as Grambling struck
first early in the 1st quarter to begin the game at 7 - 0, but
Alcorn said not so fast my friend and scored about five minutes later and at
the end of the 1st, they were tied at 10 all and in the 2nd
quarter, it was all Grambling State as they scored 28 consecutive points
primarily behind their dynamic quarterback Devante Kincade, who finished the
game with 223 passing yards and 2 TD’s and 75 rushing yards and again, 2 TD’s and
he was also named the games Offensive MVP, but he eventually left the game due
to a minor head injury and the Tigers would lead 38 – 10.

Broderick Fobbs SWAC Coach of the Year |
But the momentum shifted in the 4th as
the Braves mounted a comeback and scored 22 points as they had the fans of GSU
a little nervous, but Grambling held on for the win 40 – 32 as they capture the
last game played for the SWAC Championship. During the postgame presser, I
asked Grambling’s Head Coach Broderick Fobbs, who was awarded the SWAC Coach of
the Year, my question and the coaches
response is audio only.
With Grambling State winning their 2nd
consecutive SWAC Championship, they will now travel to Atlanta to tangle with
North Carolina A&T, the MEAC Champion, in the Celebration Bowl aka the HBCU
Bowl on December 16.
